George Mitchell - 1924

This is a potted history of one of the first inmates at Vanbrugh Castle School - George Mitchell.

He started at the school in January 2024. His father had served in the RAF in World War One but unfortunately died of Spanish flu towards the end of it.

His mother, left with two young children, decided the school was probably the best place for him although he was only about six years old. However by the time that September of 1924 came round his mother had remarried and she decided to withdraw him from the school and take him back home to be with his new family and his younger brother.

Later when WW2 broke out George signed up and served as an anti-aircraft gunner which left him partially deaf and he was bald in his 20's. He married Sylvia and they remained together until their deaths in their 80's. Charlotte, his great niece, describes him as a funny, smartly dressed caring man who was always a joy to spend time with.
